Description
New students, including students enrolling in college for the first time and students transferring to Durham Tech, are strongly encouraged to attend a New Student Orientation after completing the enrollment application.
New Student Orientations prepare students to start strong and succeed in college by:
- Connecting students to members of their new college community
- Reviewing the enrollment process to ensure students have completed necessary requirements
- Helping students know what steps to take to prepare for their first semester and beyond
- Identifying resources and services available to support students’ well-being and success
- Reviewing students’ program information and requirements
- Teaching students about the course registration process
- Assisting with planning courses for upcoming semesters based on students’ program requirements and personal responsibilities

- What should I bring to my New Student Orientation?
You'll receive important information about Durham Tech during New Student Orientation. We recommend bringing items such as a pen and paper to take notes during the presentation.
- When do New Student Orientations begin?
New Student Orientations begin promptly at the start time noted. If you are unable to attend the entire orientation, have to leave early, or arrive late, you may sign up to attend another orientation. Please select a date that will allow you to attend the entire time.
- Can I bring a guest with me?
Seating is limited and reserved for new students attending New Student Orientations. Guests may wait in the College Café (Main Campus) or Welcome Desk area in the Building 10 lobby.
- Where do I go for my New Student Orientation?
New Student Orientations on Main Campus will take place in the Wynn Center (Building 10), room 301. The campus address is 1637 East Lawson Street Durham, North Carolina 27703. Please review the Campus Map (linked) to prepare for your visit.
- Are accommodations provided at New Student Orientations for students with special needs?
If you are an individual with a disability and need an accommodation(s) for the New Student Orientation, contact Accessibility Services at 919-536-7200 ext. 1105. Please give staff at least two weeks notice prior to the orientation you are registered to attend to process your accommodation request.
- What is my next step after completing New Student Orientation?
Durham Tech students are required to check in with their academic advisor every fall and spring prior to registering for classes. New students can meet with an academic advisor in the Advising Services department. Walk-in advising is available daily during business hours, and appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis. - What if I miss my New Student Orientation and/or do not see any upcoming dates?
Students who miss their New Student Orientation may revisit the New Student Orientation webpage and register for another upcoming session. If additional dates are not yet available, please proceed with meeting with an academic advisor.
